What is AnyType?
any-sync-dockercompose is a Docker Compose project for self-hosting the any-sync network, the P2P synchronization backend behind Anytype. It deploys a coordinator, three sync nodes, a file node, a consensus node, and a connectivity monitor, all backed by MongoDB for metadata, Redis for caching, and Garage (S3-compatible) for encrypted file storage. The stack generates a client configuration file (client.yml) that you import into Anytype desktop or mobile apps to use your own sync infrastructure. It targets personal use, review, or testing; for high-load production the project recommends Puppet or Ansible modules. The project is MIT-licensed and maintained by the Any Association.
Should you self-host AnyType?
AnyType scores 57/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #5 of 15 in File Sync. It has 954 GitHub stars.
It shipped 11 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v8.0.1, came out on 25 September 2026. New versions land roughly every 3 weeks.
Setup is moderate: expect some configuration beyond a single command. It is MIT-licensed and written mostly in Shell.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is Syncthing (90/100, 89 834 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See AnyType vs Syncthing side by side.
