What is Wrench Board?
Wrench Board is a diagnostic workbench for board-level electronics repair, built by a microsoldering technician for the right-to-repair community. It ingests a schematic PDF and a boardview file (supporting 16 formats including KiCad, OpenBoardView, and various vendor formats), compiles them into a queryable electrical graph with classified nets and inferred boot sequences, and runs a Claude Opus 4.8 diagnostic agent that pilots the boardview visually through 44 custom tools. The agent never fabricates reference designators — every refdes originates from a tool lookup, with a server-side sanitizer wrapping unverified tokens. Two pure-sync deterministic engines (simulator and hypothesizer) provide verifiable causal chains without LLM calls at runtime. The system includes a Knowledge Factory with four Claude personas that build verified repair packs in ~2 minutes, a microsolder-evolve overnight self-improvement loop, and camera integration for live microscope/webcam capture. It runs locally via Python 3.11+/FastAPI on port 8000, requires an Anthropic API key, and uses file-based memory stores (no database). The license is proprietary source-available: free for personal evaluation, study, and local use, and independent repair professionals may use it commercially as an internal tool. Redistribution, hosted SaaS deployment, and AI training use require written permission.
Should you self-host Wrench Board?
Wrench Board scores 40/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #134 of 166 in Developer Tools. It has 250 GitHub stars.
It shipped 9 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v1.3.4, came out on 20 June 2026. New versions land roughly every 4 days.
Setup is advanced: plan for several services and some ongoing maintenance. It is Other-licensed and written mostly in Python.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is openhands (87/100, 92 105 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See Wrench Board vs openhands side by side.
