Important
The public tmate servers (ssh.tmate.io) were shut down in July 2025, so tmate
no longer works out of the box. A rewrite of the server in Rust and the return
of the hosted service are tracked in #336.
Until then, you can run your own tmate-ssh-server
and point tmate at it with the tmate-server-* options.
Tmate is a fork of tmux. It provides an instant pairing solution.
