What is os1?

OS1 (nokodo) is a self-hostable, open-source AI platform built for individuals and teams who want full control over their AI workspace. It combines autonomous multi-turn agents that can plan, act, and delegate sub-tasks; a coding agent with sandboxed terminal and file editing via E2B; deep research with multi-iteration search and document synthesis; and real-time collaborative chats where humans and AI models share conversations with thread branching. The platform includes persistent memory across sessions, a Jinja2-based composable prompting engine, AI-generated artifacts (canvas tool for files, images, code), and an admin console for user management, OIDC/SSO, role-based access, rate limiting, and audit logging. It runs via Docker Compose with PostgreSQL 17, Qdrant vector database, and Valkey (Redis-compatible) as dependencies. The frontend is a Progressive Web App with push notifications and installable on mobile/desktop; native iOS/Android apps are on the roadmap. The project is in alpha stage with pre-release versions (v0.3.0-rc.2 for frontend/console, v1.0.0-rc.2 for library) and expects breaking changes. Licensed under the custom OS1 License (attribution permission over AGPL-3.0 base) which allows commercial use with credit but reserves AI training rights.

Should you self-host os1?

os1 scores 42/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #80 of 120 in AI Assistant. It has 199 GitHub stars.

There was no stable release in the past 12 months, so check the repository's recent activity before you rely on it.

Setup is advanced: plan for several services and some ongoing maintenance. An official Docker image is available. It is Other-licensed and written mostly in Python.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is hermes-agent (89/100, 257 957 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See os1 vs hermes-agent side by side.

How to install os1

Install os1 with Docker Compose

Docker with Docker Compose
Environment variables
POSTGRES_USER, POSTGRES_PASSWORD, POSTGRES_DB, NOKODO__SECURITY__SECRET_KEY, NOKODO__SECURITY__CORS_ORIGINS, NOKODO__BRANDING__PUBLIC_FRONTEND_ORIGIN, API_ORIGIN, NOKODO__CACHE__REDIS__URL, NOKODO__ASSETS__VECTOR_DATABASE__QDRANT__URL
git clone https://gitlab.com/nokodo/os1.git
cd os1/.docker
docker compose up -d

open http://localhost:888 for the main app or http://localhost:8383 for the admin console.

before going live, update NOKODO__SECURITY__SECRET_KEY to a long random string and set NOKODO__SECURITY__CORS_ORIGINS, NOKODO__BRANDING__PUBLIC_FRONTEND_ORIGIN, and API_ORIGIN to your actual domain URLs. see .docker/docker-compose.yml for all available options.

Production deployment uses pre-built images from registry.gitlab.com/nokodo/os1/{backend,frontend,console}. Requires PostgreSQL 17, Qdrant, Valkey.
