What is geneweb?
GeneWeb is a free, open-source genealogy application created by Daniel de Rauglaudre in 1998. It powers large-scale collaborative databases like Roglo (11+ million individuals) and was the engine behind Geneanet for two decades. The software runs a local web server (default port 2317) providing a browser-based interface for creating and exploring family trees. Key capabilities include full GEDCOM import/export for interoperability, granular privacy controls to protect living persons' data, advanced relationship finding across billions of paths, and proven scalability to millions of records. It is written in OCaml and distributed as pre-built binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows, as a Docker image (ghcr.io/geneweb/geneweb), and can be built from source with OCaml 4.10+ and opam. The current 7.1 release is in beta due to database format compatibility with Geneanet infrastructure. No user authentication integrations (OIDC/LDAP/SAML) are documented; access control uses a built-in admin account and wizard password file.
