ghcr.io/yyjeqhc/webcodex-serverWhat is WebCodex?
This self-hosted runtime system enables AI assistants to access code repositories on your local machines. The architecture uses a Server component that authenticates requests and forwards them to Runner processes running on computers where code lives. You get the ability to inspect files, edit code with safeguards, execute tests and compilers locally, manage Git operations, run long-running tasks visibly, and review work through a browser console. Installation comes via npm, native platform packages (.deb for Debian/Ubuntu, NSIS for Windows, macOS installers), or Docker containers. Set it up on one machine or across multiple machines with a central Server coordinating several Runners.
Should you self-host WebCodex?
WebCodex scores 55/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #60 of 166 in Developer Tools. It has 2 443 GitHub stars.
It shipped 7 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v0.4.6, came out on 4 October 2026. New versions land roughly every 2 days.
Setup is moderate: expect some configuration beyond a single command. An official Docker image is available. It is Apache-2.0-licensed and written mostly in Rust.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is openhands (87/100, 92 079 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See WebCodex vs openhands side by side.
