What is tessera?
Tessera is a local workspace that brings AI coding agents together in one place. It runs several agents — Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode — each inside its own Git worktree so they stay separate. The interface gives you projects, collections, tabs, split panes, and a Kanban board that moves tasks from chat through review to done. You can edit code, see diffs, commit, push branches, and open pull requests all inside the app. A lead agent can coordinate workers through a built-in CLI. Phones pair through a remote-access feature to keep sessions going on the go. Data lives under ~/.tessera/ and requests go through the provider CLIs you already use. Install as a desktop app on Windows, macOS, or Linux, run via npm, or deploy with Docker Compose. Licensed AGPL-3.0; team features are planned.
Should you self-host tessera?
tessera scores 47/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #98 of 166 in Developer Tools. It has 314 GitHub stars.
It shipped 15 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v0.2.4, came out on 25 September 2026. New versions land roughly every 6 days.
Setup is moderate: expect some configuration beyond a single command. It is AGPL-3.0-licensed and written mostly in Typescript.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is openhands (87/100, 92 105 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See tessera vs openhands side by side.
