What is ruptime?
ruptime modernizes the classic Berkeley r-commands for today's multi-network environments. It uses a client-server model with symmetric encryption over TCP port 51300, replacing the original UDP broadcast approach. The suite includes ten commands: ruptime for uptime and load, runame for OS/kernel details, rsw for package manager inventory, rhw for hardware inventory (age, cores, memory), rload for CPU/MEM/GPU utilization, rbench for benchmark comparisons, rnet for network interface speeds, rdisk for disk overview, rac for user connect time, and rwho for logged-in users. Clients run as simple shell scripts with minimal dependencies (nc, xz, bc, cron, memtester, etc.) and can operate on read-only filesystems. The server (ruptimed) stores data in a spool directory and can run on a ram disk. Installation is available via apt (Debian/Ubuntu), homebrew (macOS), apk (Alpine), or manual setup with systemd, init.d, rc.d, launchd, or cron. The project is licensed AGPL-3.0 and supports Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD.
Should you self-host ruptime?
ruptime scores 45/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #17 of 19 in Infrastructure Monitoring. It has 213 GitHub stars.
There was no stable release in the past 12 months, so check the repository's recent activity before you rely on it.
Setup is moderate: expect some configuration beyond a single command. It is AGPL-3.0-licensed and written mostly in Shell.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is Beszel (81/100, 26 614 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See ruptime vs Beszel side by side.
