What is Matrix Hookshot?

Matrix Hookshot is a Matrix bot and bridge that connects rooms on your homeserver to external project-management and code-hosting services. It ships first-class support for GitHub, GitLab, Jira, OpenProject, Figma, Challenge Hound and RSS/Atom feeds, plus generic inbound and outbound webhooks whose payloads can be reshaped into Matrix messages with small sandboxed JavaScript templates. Rooms are linked to services either dynamically through aliases or statically through room state events, and configuration widgets let users manage connections inside Element instead of typing bot commands. It stores its data in Matrix room state, so no external database is needed, though an optional Redis cache speeds startup and enables features such as resuming feeds across restarts. End-to-bridge encryption lets the bot work inside encrypted rooms when the homeserver supports the relevant MSCs. Admins control what each user may do with fine-grained per-service permissions, and a Prometheus metrics endpoint plus a sample Grafana dashboard are provided. You self-host it as the ghcr.io container image, with the Helm chart on Kubernetes, or by building the Node.js project from source and registering it as an appservice on your homeserver.

Should you self-host Matrix Hookshot?

Matrix Hookshot scores 52/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #26 of 33 in Communication. It has 460 GitHub stars.

It shipped 10 stable releases in the past year. The latest, 7.6.0, came out on 26 October 2026. New versions land roughly every 3 weeks.

Setup is moderate: expect some configuration beyond a single command. An official Docker image is available. It is Apache-2.0-licensed and written mostly in Typescript.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is Jitsi Meet (79/100, 30 159 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See Matrix Hookshot vs Jitsi Meet side by side.
