What is EdenText?

EdenText is a full-featured word processor that runs completely in the browser with no backend required. Documents never leave the user's computer — all processing is local. It opens and saves both DOCX and ODT formats, exports PDF, and provides real page layout with margins, headers, footers, footnotes, columns, and mirrored margins for book printing. Advanced features include styles with inheritance, tables with spreadsheet formulas, table of contents, cross-references, citations, bibliography, track changes with threaded comments, spell checking in multiple languages, and an optional AI assistant that connects to a user-provided provider. It can be self-hosted via a Docker image (ghcr.io/stffnb/edentext) or by serving the built static files from any web server. Desktop installers for macOS, Windows, and Linux are also provided. The project is in beta and licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Should you self-host EdenText?

EdenText scores 49/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #31 of 46 in Document Management. It has 560 GitHub stars.

It shipped 10 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v0.12.0, came out on 23 October 2026. New versions land roughly every 4 days.

Setup is easy: most people get it running in one sitting. An official Docker image is available. It is AGPL-3.0-licensed and written mostly in Typescript.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is Reactive Resume (87/100, 44 990 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See EdenText vs Reactive Resume side by side.
