us-central1-docker.pkg.dev/fluid-analogy-473415-c2/public/durable-actorsWhat is Durable Actors?
Durable Actors provides a runtime for building real-time, multi-agent systems where each actor maintains durable state and handles requests serially. It offers TypeScript and Python SDKs with automatic client generation, WebSocket support for live updates, and built-in observability. The system can be self-hosted on Google Cloud via a Helm chart deploying to GKE Sandbox with PostgreSQL, Redis, and GCS buckets. Local development runs on Bun. It's positioned as an open-source replacement for Cloudflare Durable Objects without vendor lock-in or memory limits.
Should you self-host Durable Actors?
Durable Actors scores 44/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #114 of 166 in Developer Tools. It has 257 GitHub stars.
It shipped 10 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v0.14.0, came out on 27 October 2026.
Setup is advanced: plan for several services and some ongoing maintenance. An official Docker image is available. It is MIT-licensed and written mostly in Rust.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is rivet (71/100, 6 408 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See Durable Actors vs rivet side by side.
