What is clay?
Clay Studio is a self-hosted workspace that lets developers and AI coding agents work together in shared projects and live sessions. It runs as a local Node.js daemon on your machine, serving a browser-based workspace accessible from any device. The software integrates with ten different coding agents — detecting locally installed runtimes automatically. Core capabilities include shared projects with live collaboration (presence, cursors, mentions, handoffs), persistent AI collaborators called Mates with their own identity and memory, cross-provider continuity via the YOKE interface, parallel background work using git worktrees and Ralph Loops, a PWA for mobile with push notifications, and built-in tools for file browsing, terminals, MCP servers, and skill management. All data stays on your infrastructure in portable JSONL and Markdown files. Multi-user mode supports role-based access with admin controls. The project is licensed under AGPL-3.0-only and distributed via npm as clay-server.
