What is Busabase?

Busabase is an MIT-licensed database and workspace built as a central hub for AI agents. It gives agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor a shared place to read and write structured data — typed records with relations, versioned documents, files, reusable playbooks, internal tools, whiteboards, and workflows. Every agent write becomes a change request with a diff, author, and history; permissions control whether it merges automatically or waits for human approval. The software runs locally with an embedded PGlite database and local file storage, requires no external services, works offline, and connects to any agent via multiple protocols and official SDKs. The same engine powers a hosted cloud offering for teams. Self-hosting options include Docker, a native desktop app for major operating systems, global npm install, or running from source.

Should you self-host Busabase?

Busabase scores 51/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #44 of 125 in AI. It has 611 GitHub stars.

It shipped 10 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v0.99.1, came out on 24 October 2026. New versions land roughly every 1 days.

Setup is easy: most people get it running in one sitting. An official Docker image is available. It is MIT-licensed and written mostly in Typescript.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is Memos (86/100, 64 136 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See Busabase vs Memos side by side.

FAQ

Is my data private?

Yes. With the local engine your data never leaves your machine; on Cloud it stays in your own space. You stay in control.

What happens to rejected changes?

Rejected work never enters canonical data. Every decision (approve, request changes, reject) stays attached so the record remains explainable later.

How is this different from Notion or a shared drive?

Notion and shared drives are for human-written content; AI chat tools forget when sessions end. Busabase is where agent work lands as typed data, docs, skills, and apps with full change history.

Which agents does it work with?

Any agent that can call a REST API — including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, n8n, Zapier, LangChain, or your own custom agent.

Can sensitive data stay inside our own network?

Yes, Busabase Desktop keeps data on your machine, and the Docker image runs on your own server inside your network. Cloud is optional.

Is Busabase open source?

Yes, the local engine is open source (MIT) and can be run yourself with no SaaS required.
