What is WakeMyPotato?
WakeMyPotato (WMP) is a last-resort systemd service for Linux that keeps repurposed old laptops running as home servers alive after power failures. It programs automatic rtcwake calls to schedule a reboot, safely powers down RAID arrays to prevent mechanical wear, and attempts to boot once AC power is restored after a configurable wait time. The service runs a check every minute via a systemd timer; if AC power is lost or an optional ping target becomes unreachable, it triggers an emergency shutdown with a scheduled wake-up. Installation is via a bash script that deploys systemd unit files and helper binaries to /usr/local/sbin. The project is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and targets personal and homelab users with older hardware lacking Wake-on-LAN or BIOS wake timers.
