What is SpaceMesh?
This project implements the Spacemesh protocol as a full node written in Go. The Spacemesh network uses a race-free consensus mechanism built on proof-of-space-time rather than proof-of-work, aiming for energy-efficient operation on ordinary home computers. The node software handles peer-to-peer networking, exposes public and private gRPC interfaces, and can perform smeshing (the network's mining equivalent) using GPU or CPU resources through OpenCL. Operators join a testnet by fetching a JSON configuration file and launching the compiled binary or a Docker container. Account management and transactions are handled through a separate command-line wallet application. The codebase is MIT licensed and maintained by the Spacemesh organization.
Should you self-host SpaceMesh?
SpaceMesh scores 50/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #11 of 18 in Blockchain. It has 779 GitHub stars.
There was no stable release in the past 12 months, so check the repository's recent activity before you rely on it.
Setup is advanced: plan for several services and some ongoing maintenance. It is MIT-licensed and written mostly in Go.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is geth-ethereum (86/100, 51 450 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See SpaceMesh vs geth-ethereum side by side.
