What is sandboxed.sh?
Orb (formerly sandboxed.sh) is a self-hosted AI agent orchestration platform for running coding agents in three modes: locally on macOS, on private Linux servers with container isolation, or via cloud coordinators like Hermes and ChatGPT. The Rust backend manages projects, missions, and remote execution, with native macOS (Tauri/SolidJS) and iOS (SwiftUI) clients. Users bring their own AI subscriptions via OAuth or CLIProxyAPI Plus. Features include live mission steering, side-agent questions, durable wake-ups, workspace transfer, and rich transcripts. The backend runs on Linux via Docker or systemd with a REST API and MCP server. No public license file was found in the repository.
Should you self-host sandboxed.sh?
sandboxed.sh scores 50/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #96 of 209 in AI Agents. It has 666 GitHub stars.
It shipped 7 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v0.12.0, came out on 16 May 2026. New versions land roughly every 4 days.
Setup is advanced: plan for several services and some ongoing maintenance. It is written mostly in Rust.
Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is Orca (91/100, 108 555 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See sandboxed.sh vs Orca side by side.
