What is rss?

RSS is a simple, opinionated web application that aggregates RSS and Atom feeds into a social-feed-style interface. Built with PHP and modern frontend tools, it fetches feeds on a configurable schedule (default hourly, down to 5 minutes) and presents posts in four layout modes: card, grid, list, and compact. Feeds are managed through a single plaintext file where each line defines a feed URL, custom name, color, and tags. The UI supports system-based dark/light themes, post title and description search, and hiding specific feeds by default. Old posts can be automatically pruned after a configurable number of days. The project is intentionally low-maintenance with no user system, authentication, plugin system, or full article import. It runs as a single Docker container exposing port 80, with all data stored in a mounted volume. A reverse proxy is recommended for HTTPS and sub-path hosting.

Should you self-host rss?

rss scores 50/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #27 of 85 in Feed Reader. It has 566 GitHub stars.

There was no stable release in the past 12 months, so check the repository's recent activity before you rely on it.

Setup is easy: most people get it running in one sitting. An official Docker image is available. It is MIT-licensed and written mostly in PHP.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is RSSHub (85/100, 46 704 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See rss vs RSSHub side by side.
