What is proxmox?

This project packages the complete Proxmox Virtual Environment into a container image, letting you run a full Proxmox node with its web UI, KVM-accelerated virtual machines, and LXC containers on any Linux host with KVM support or Windows 11 with nested virtualization. The image includes a ready-to-use NAT bridge with DHCP and persists VM storage and cluster configuration through bind mounts. It supports both AMD64 and ARM64 architectures and requires at least 2 GB RAM and 32 GB disk space. The project is not affiliated with Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH.

Should you self-host proxmox?

proxmox scores 53/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #11 of 15 in Virtualization. It has 335 GitHub stars.

It shipped 8 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v9.2.20, came out on 11 October 2026. New versions land roughly every 2 weeks.

Setup is advanced: plan for several services and some ongoing maintenance. An official Docker image is available. It is MIT-licensed and written mostly in Shell.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is WindowsinDocker (83/100, 53 710 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See proxmox vs WindowsinDocker side by side.

FAQ

How do I verify that KVM is available?

On Linux, install cpu-checker and run kvm-ok; it should report 'KVM acceleration can be used'. Also verify /dev/kvm exists.

Are there containers available for other Proxmox products?

Yes, the project provides containers for Proxmox Backup Server, Proxmox Datacenter Manager, and Proxmox Mail Gateway.

How do I change the location of the configuration data?

Bind mount a different host path or named volume to /var/lib/pve-cluster in the container.

How do I change the location of the storage pool?

Bind mount a different host path or named volume to /var/lib/vz in the container.

How do I use it?

Start the container and connect to port 8006 in a web browser, then log in as root with the password set in the PASSWORD environment variable.
