Self-host NeXroll

NeXroll 2.2.9 adds three themes and reworks two more, so they change the whole look, not just the colors. It also fixes "Available Now!" for TV shows on Coming Soon lists.

Upgrading

• Your data carries over. No database changes and no settings to change.
• Windows: run the installer over your existing install.
• Docker: jbrns/nexroll:latest, :2.2 and :2, and the same tags on ghcr.io/jflxcloud/nexroll, are 2.2.9.
• Jellyfin and Emby: no plugin update. 1.14.2.0 (Jellyfin 10.11 and Emby) and 1.15.2.0 (Jellyfin 12) are still current.

Three new themes

Pick one under Settings > General > Theme, or step through them with the theme button in the top bar.

• Silent Film: black and white. Page headers are title cards in an ornate frame under a chapter label, pictures are black and white until you point at them, and an iris opens on each new page.
• VHS Rewind: a rental tape. Section labels read like a VCR's on-screen display, with a running tape counter, page titles are written in marker on a rainbow-striped label, and dialogs look like the VCR's blue menu.
• Screenplay (light): a shooting script in Courier. Each section sits on its own colored revision page (Library blue, Schedules pink, NeX-Up yellow and so on), page headers are scene headings such as "INT. LIBRARY - DAY", and the dashboard opens with FADE IN:.

Terminal and Nocturne, reworked

Both used to recolor the app and nothing more.

• Terminal is a green phosphor screen: monospace text, pixel-font titles, square corners, DOS-prompt page labels and scanlines.
• Nocturne is a moonlit night: a moon behind the page header, drifting cloud, frosted panels and a calm sea at the foot of the sidebar.

These four themes download their fonts the first time you pick one. With reduce motion turned on in your system settings, page-change effects are skipped. See Theme.

Fixed

• Coming Soon lists now show "Available Now!" for TV shows Sonarr has downloaded. The list only looked at premieres from today on, so a show had already dropped off by the time Sonarr downloaded it. Movies weren't affected. See Available Now!.

NeXroll 2.2.8 fixes Skip in sequences: a block set to Skip when its condition failed could still play on Jellyfin and Emby. It also makes a regenerated Coming Soon list, or a preroll uploaded again under the same name, play its new version on Jellyfin and Emby, adds Edit and Delete to Flow view, and lets fallback filler be a single preroll.

• Docker: jbrns/nexroll:latest, :2.2 and :2, and the same tags on ghcr.io/jflxcloud/nexroll, are 2.2.8.
• Jellyfin and Emby: update the plugin to 1.14.2.0 (Jellyfin 10.11 and Emby) or 1.15.2.0 (Jellyfin 12) so files NeXroll rewrites play their new version. A plugin installed from the NeXroll repository updates itself; for Emby, download it again from NeXroll's Connect page, replace it in Emby's plugins folder and restart Emby. Older plugins keep working as before. Jellyfin 12.3 needs nothing new.
• Plex: a sequence whose blocks are all skipped now empties Plex's preroll list instead of leaving the previous schedule's prerolls in it. Genre, tag, file path and audio blocks are always skipped on Plex, which never says what is starting.

Skip now skips

In Advanced mode a block can play only when its condition holds, and Otherwise: Skip this block means nothing plays in its place. When every block of a sequence was skipped, NeXroll fell back to the schedule's category, which is the first category block's, so on Jellyfin and Emby the skipped block played anyway; Plex kept the previous schedule's list. A sequence with conditions can now play nothing on purpose. Else if chains with no match and no final Otherwise behave the same way. Sequences without conditions keep the old fallback.

Rewritten files play their new version on Jellyfin and Emby

When Jellyfin or Emby can't read NeXroll's files directly, as in most Docker setups, the plugin downloads each preroll once and keeps it. It kept them under a name made from the file's path, so a regenerated Coming Soon list, or a preroll uploaded again under the same name, went on playing the first copy. NeXroll now sends each file's version: the Jellyfin plugin downloads a changed file again and removes the old copy, and Emby's replaces its copy on the next sync. Jellyfin also kept showing the old length of a rewritten file, including when it reads NeXroll's folder directly; it now measures it again.

Emby also never played genre, tag, file path or audio blocks. Emby plays only files it has downloaded ahead of time, and it was given one playback's worth of each sequence, without those branches. It now gets every file a sequence could play.

Flow view: Edit and Delete

Hover a block on the Flow canvas to change its type or delete it. Its condition, Otherwise and position stay when the type changes. An Otherwise can be changed, or deleted to a Skip, and a Skip can be given something to play. On touch screens the buttons show on the selected block. See Flow view.

Fallback filler: one preroll

Settings > Fallback filler gains Fixed Preroll: pick one preroll from your library by name to play whenever no schedule is active. See Filler Category.

Other fixes

• Saving filler settings during a schedule switched every server to the filler until the next minute.
• Deleting the first block of an Else if chain joined the rest of the chain to the block above it, so they never played. Deleting, moving and adding blocks now keep chains together.
• Generated and Coming Soon fillers and Clear Prerolls When Inactive could change Plex's list between two prerolls and stop Plex on the next one. They now wait, like every other change.
• Windows: the update notice could offer a release you already had, and a preroll folder picked in the installer was ignored, because the installer skipped writing its version and folders.
• Jellyfin-only installs re-applied a sequence with nothing to play every minute, the dashboard showed nothing while a generated preroll filler ran, and choosing "-- Select --" for a filler category failed to save.
• The Generator page header is one compact row.

NeXroll 2.2.7 is a security update. Anyone who could reach a NeXroll install could download files from it, its database included, and while login was off, other websites could use NeXroll through your browser. Please update soon, especially on Docker. It also brings length filters and one row per preroll to Community Prerolls, themes that recolor the whole app, and a Windows installer on Python 3.14.

• Jellyfin and Emby: no plugin update is needed; 1.14.1.0 (Jellyfin 10.11 and Emby) and 1.15.1.0 (Jellyfin 12) are current.
• Password reset works only sent straight to http://localhost on the NeXroll machine, as the sign-in screen shows; through a reverse proxy or tunnel it is refused.
• Docker PUID and PGID take effect only with NEXROLL_RUN_AS_PUID=true (Unraid: Run as PUID/PGID). Without it, nothing changes.

Security

• Files could be downloaded without logging in. The links the Jellyfin and Emby plugins stream prerolls from were signed with a key anyone could work out (the same on every Docker install), and the route that serves them accepted any file. Anyone who could reach NeXroll could download, for example, its database, which holds your Plex token and server keys, even with login on. Each install now has its own random key, and only videos are served. Affects 1.12.0 through 2.2.6.
• Jellyfin and Emby plugin setup didn't require login. Anyone who could reach NeXroll could point the plugin at another server and collect a new API key. Setup now needs a signed-in user; the routes the plugins use are unchanged.
• Other websites could use NeXroll through your browser while login was off. NeXroll now answers other sites only on the plugin routes and the API-key /external/ routes, and refuses changes a browser marks as coming from another site. Scripts, dashboards that call /external/ with a key, and the plugins are not affected.
• Password reset and the local admin shortcuts trusted requests relayed by a reverse proxy or tunnel on the same machine. They now accept only requests sent straight to localhost.
• The current-preroll preview could play any video on the machine by its path. It now plays only the files NeXroll lists.
• Updated components. The Windows installer moves from Python 3.10.11, which no longer receives fixes, to 3.14, with updated libraries. The Docker image patches basic-ftp (CVE-2026-102990) in the YouTube PO-token provider and takes Deno from its official image instead of an install script.

Community Prerolls

Browse and Search filter by length, with presets or a custom range, and sort shortest or longest first. Lengths are read from the files themselves in the background after an index build. The Plex, Jellyfin and Emby versions of a preroll are now one row with a chip per version: the download dialog ticks the versions for the servers you have connected, and previews switch between them. Search lists direct matches first, the same file stored in two folders shows once, titles are tidier, an index older than a week keeps working while it asks for a refresh, and an optional weekly refresh keeps it current. See Community Prerolls.

Themes

Every theme now recolors the whole app, section colors, buttons and sidebar included, instead of leaving parts of it in the default colors.

Docker

The container can run as a non-root user: set NEXROLL_RUN_AS_PUID=true with PUID and PGID, and NeXroll gives that user the files it created as root before starting as it. Images are also tagged with their minor and major version (2.2, 2) (#46). See Docker.

NeXroll 2.2.6 fixes two problems in 2.2.5. Plex no longer stops on a trailer when NeXroll updates the preroll list between two prerolls, and on installs that run Plex alongside Jellyfin or Emby, Jellyfin and Emby switch to filler or a blended schedule straight away again.

Plex stopping on a trailer

Plex reads its preroll list as the prerolls play, so NeXroll holds a preroll change while someone is in their prerolls (the Playback Guard). Between two prerolls or trailers, though, Plex reports nothing playing for a moment. A change that landed in that moment slipped past the guard, and Plex then stopped on the next trailer because it was no longer in the list. NeXroll now recognizes the prerolls, trailers and movie of one playback as the same session and keeps holding changes through the gap. 2.2.5 picks new random prerolls every 3 minutes, which made this more likely. See Configuration.

Jellyfin and Emby alongside Plex

Jellyfin and Emby ask NeXroll what to play when playback starts. In 2.2.5, when filler started or a blend switched while a Plex movie was in its prerolls, NeXroll waited for Plex before recording the change, so Jellyfin and Emby kept playing the schedule that had ended. They now switch at once; only the Plex update waits. Installs with only Plex, or only Jellyfin or Emby, were not affected.

NeXroll 2.2.5 is a fix and quality update to 2.2.4. On Plex, random prerolls and trailers now change every 3 minutes, filler and blended schedules stop rewriting Plex every minute, and a schedule set to a NeX-Up trailer category plays your trailers.

Back up your configuration before updating (Settings > Backup and Restore).

Random picks every 3 minutes on Plex

Plex holds a fixed preroll list, so random blocks, random NeX-Up and Library Trailers blocks, and conditions only change when NeXroll writes a new list. That now happens every 3 minutes instead of 10, so movies started close together get different prerolls more often. A rotation that comes due while someone is watching prerolls still waits for the playback guard. A sequence of fixed blocks is written once and left alone, and routine rotations stay off the Logs page's Events (they are still in app.log). See Sequences.

Filler and blends

Filler was written to Plex on every scheduler tick, once a minute, with an event logged each time, and a random filler sequence picked again every minute. Filler is now written when it starts, and a random filler sequence picks again every 3 minutes. Blended schedules switched most minutes; they now take turns every 3 minutes, and a sequence that wins twice in a row still gets new random picks.

NeX-Up trailer categories

A schedule set to NeX-Up Movie Trailers or NeX-Up TV Trailers played nothing when the trailers came from a sync, because a sync never added them to the category. Plex kept the previous schedule's prerolls, and the log blamed "no media server configured". Every downloaded trailer is now in its category, and a trailer you switch off stays out of it. See NeX-Up.

Fixed

• A sequence schedule that won back from another one kept the other schedule's prerolls until its next rotation.
• A change held for playback could wait 5 more minutes after the movie was past its prerolls.
• With Jellyfin or Emby also set up, a rotation Plex didn't take waited for the next one.
• Saved Sequences showed "0 schedules" for every sequence. It now shows the schedules built from each one, which are switched off, and whether the filler uses it.
