What is Greenmask?

Greenmask is an open-source command-line program that dumps, anonymizes, and restores databases while generating synthetic test data. It supports PostgreSQL (production ready) and MySQL (beta), producing output compatible with standard PostgreSQL and MySQL dump utilities. Features include database subsetting for smaller consistent development copies, deterministic masking via hash functions, dynamic parameters adapting to other column values, conditional transformation logic, and inheritance for partitioned tables. Storage options cover local directories, S3-compatible services (AWS S3, MinIO, GCS, Cloudflare R2), Azure Blob Storage, and SSH/SFTP. It provides parallel execution, pgzip compression, and custom transformers in any language. Available as a single binary, Docker image, Homebrew package, or install script, it fits into CI/CD pipelines for automated database masking and recovery workflows.

Should you self-host Greenmask?

Greenmask scores 57/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #28 of 40 in Database Management. It has 1 798 GitHub stars.

It shipped 10 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v0.2.26, came out on 23 October 2026. New versions land roughly every 3 weeks.

Setup is moderate: expect some configuration beyond a single command. An official Docker image is available. It is Apache-2.0-licensed and written mostly in Go.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is supabase (92/100, 114 248 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See Greenmask vs supabase side by side.
