What is Spottarr?

Spottarr is a modern Spotnet client that indexes decentralized Usenet spots and serves them via a Newznab API, allowing *arr applications (Radarr, Sonarr, Lidarr, Readarr, Prowlarr) to search Spotnet content directly. It runs as a Docker container with a built-in SQLite database (optional experimental Postgres support) and provides a maintenance REST API for reindexing and reimporting spots. The Newznab API can be secured with an optional API key, and the admin API requires a separate key. Configuration is done via environment variables for Usenet server connection, Spotnet import settings, and database provider.

Should you self-host Spottarr?

Spottarr scores 45/100 on selfhost.directory (how scoring works) and ranks #34 of 45 in Download Management. It has 152 GitHub stars.

It shipped 7 stable releases in the past year. The latest, v1.20.0, came out on 9 August 2026. New versions land roughly every 3 weeks.

Setup is moderate: expect some configuration beyond a single command. An official Docker image is available. It is MIT-licensed and written mostly in C#.

Its closest alternative on selfhost.directory is cobalt (83/100, 45 586 stars). It scores higher overall, so compare the two before you pick. See Spottarr vs cobalt side by side.
