What is free-sleep?

Free Sleep takes an Eight Sleep Pod off the cloud by installing its own software directly on the small Linux computer inside the pod. After opening the device and gaining root over a JTAG serial connection, a one-line bash script deploys a Node.js and Express service that starts automatically on boot and serves a React web interface plus a REST API at the pod's LAN address on port 3000. From any device on the same network you can adjust each side's temperature in real time, set power on/off times, queue temperature changes and a daily prime time, configure alarms, and change timezone, away mode and the pod LED brightness. An optional biometrics mode records heart rate, breathing rate and HRV into a SQLite database with charts in the app; the project notes only heart rate has been validated. Internet access can be blocked afterwards because nothing depends on it, and a firmware reset returns the pod to the official app. Only Pod 3, 4 and 5 are compatible, and installation involves hardware teardown.

FAQ

Will it void my warranty?

Free Sleep is not officially supported by 8 Sleep, so it could affect your warranty, though the firmware can be fully reset with no permanent hardware modification.

Will I brick my pod?

Pod 3 without the SD card, Pod 4 and Pod 5 are described as impossible to brick as long as you follow the directions.

Is it reversible?

Yes, you can firmware reset the pod at any time and go back to the official 8 Sleep app.
